Start with the actual document
A standard is a description used to evaluate breed type. Read the version published by the relevant registry rather than a comparison graphic with no date. The AKC document describes balance, proportions, movement and temperament together; a single dramatic feature is not the whole dog.
Look past a number
A measurement can be useful when read in context, but it is not a target to exceed. Size alone does not establish sound structure, good health or an appropriate temperament. If you are assessing a prospective dog, discuss those separate questions with the breeder, rescue and your veterinarian.
Keep registration and suitability separate
Registration, a show result and a good household fit answer different questions. Ask to see the individual’s records and observe ordinary behavior. A companion does not need a show career to deserve good care, and a title does not replace a thoughtful introduction to your home.
